Alice Springs: The Heart of The Australian Outback
Alice Springs -
It's Australia's Oasis, the capital of the Outback and the
most romantic country town in the world. Year round blue
skies, stunning landscapes and a vibrant, diverse community -
that's Alice Springs!
Only a two hour flight from most Australian cities, Alice
Springs is a must see destination renowned for its unique
identity and rich cultural heritage. It's where the
Arrernte Aboriginal tribal group have lived for 20,000 years
and where pioneer men and women gave "tough" a new meaning.
It's where they race camels, hold hilarious holiday regattas
in dry river beds and where Peter Finch finally caught up with
Virginia McKenna in the 1956 film classic "A Town Like Alice".
Alice Springs is located right in the middle of the Australian
continent makes, making it THE place to go if you want to
explore the Australian Outback. Its historical sites and
attractions make it a popular destination if you want to get a
feel for what it used to be like, over hundred years ago when
the first explorers and then the first settlers ventured into
the red heart of Australia. Yet at the same time it is a
modern town with all the usual comforts and facilities to make
your journey satisfying.
So whether you fly, drive or take the train, you might want to
set aside extra time to take in everything there is to see and
do in Alice Springs as well as the stunning scenery of the
Western and Eastern (Macs) MacDonnell Ranges. Here are such a
few of the must do's on your Alice Spirngs visit!

East & West Macs
This is truly must see
country!
The
Western MacDonnell (West Macs) Ranges is Albert Namatjira
country and once you've seen it you'll fall in love with it.
The spectacular gorges and chasms provide the perfect scenario
for a whole range of adventure and activities.
The Western Macs is an outstanding example of an ancient
landscape sculptured over time by climatic elements. Cool
scenic gorges are important refuges for a collection of plants
and animals, many of which are found only here and some are
relicts of a bygone era of tropical forests.
There
are many opportunities for visitors to explore and appreciate
the scenic beauty and history of the area. Features of the
landscape are significant in the stories of Western Arrernte
Aboriginal culture, and have existed for many thousands of
years.
Experience the arid central Australian landscape in an
enjoyable and different way along the Simpsons Gap Bicycle
Path.
This
sealed path meanders for 17 km through attractive bushland
between Flynns Grave and Simpsons Gap. The path meanders
cross-country with generally easy grades, making it a relaxing
and scenic ride for visitors of all ages.
Vantage points provide panoramic views of the hills and ranges
encircling Alice Springs. You see part of this ancient
landscape as the path winds from creekside woodlands of River
Red Gums, through Mulga and Witchetty Bush groves, to exposed
rocky hills.

The
Eastern MacDonnell (East Macs) Ranges contain interesting
Aboriginal paintings and are important spiritual sites to the
Eastern Arrernte Aboriginal people.
Again spectacular gorges provide the perfect scenario for a
whole range of adventure and activities.
Many places in the landscape are associated with the same
Dreamtime story. Together these places form a 'Dreaming
Trail'. Emily and Jessie Gaps are associated with the
caterpillar trail. Emily Gap is the most significant, as this
is where the caterpillar beings of Mparntwe (Alice Springs)
originated.
These caterpillars formed Emily Gap and many of the
topographic features around Alice Springs, then radiated out
to the edge of the Simpson Desert.
Other gorges are noted for there sheer quartzite cliffs and
River Red Gum lined watercourses. Water holes in this area
attract a lot of wildlife, including a diverse range of
birdlife. The uncommon Black-flanked Rock-wallaby is
ironically the most commonly sighted mammal here. Not so
easily seen amongst the spinifex along the rocky ridges are
the nocturnal Fat-tailed Antechinus and the large Knob-tailed
gecko.
Further
along the Eastern Macs you can experience the "Gold Rush"
days.

So whether you take a tour or self drive this beautiful
country of ours you will be AMAZED, we promise you that.
Larapinta Trail
If you want
adventure then we've got adventure!
The
Larapinta Trail is without doubt one of Australia's most
spectacular and exciting long distance overnight treks. The
Trail runs over 223 kilometres along the backbone of the West
MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs west to Mt Sonder. It is
divided into twelve sections.
Walkers can join or leave the Trail at a number of points
accessible to motor vehicles at regular intervals along its
route. In effect, the Trail comprises a series of shorter
sections, each a one or two day walk. In this way people can
choose the length of time spent on the Trail.
The
Larapinta Trail begins at the old Alice Springs Telegraph
Station and meanders through many gaps and sheltered
gorges, climbs steeply over the rugged ranges, and has
numerous stunning views and opportunities to photograph or
admire the spectacular landscape. The Trail takes in a variety
of desert habitats before rewarding walkers with 360 degree
vistas from Mt Sonder - the highest point and end of the
Trail.
The
Trail is primarily intended to appeal to trekkers: people who
are not wilderness or "map and compass" bushwalkers but
nevertheless are capable and prepared to carry reasonable
loads and camp out. The entire Trail will be passable to this
type of walker. However, some sections are designed to
slightly higher standards with additional facilities, in order
to be attractive to people with less bushwalking experience.
The Trail itself is made up of a range of grades catering for
hikers of varying abilities. All walkers on the Trail need to
have a good level of fitness and must be well prepared and
equipped.
Camping out under a sea of stars in
the
outback is a highlight of the Trail experience. Although they
vary, most camp sites offer picnic tables and hardened tent
sites - all Trailheads have a water supply and some have free
gas barbecues. The quality of the water supplies cannot be
guaranteed along the trail and it is recommended walkers
either boil the water or use a filter or sterilizing tablets
such as Puritabs.
Our Night
Skies
Alice
Springs is not just the centre of Australia but the brilliant
night skies will mak you feel like it's the centre of the
Universe !
But don't just
take our word for it. Allow the Alice Springs Graduate of
Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics to explain, "well it's
actually after the sun goes down that the greatest wonder of
the desert reveals itself. Out here the night sky is not just
a flat surface directly above your head - it's an
awe-inspiring dome that reaches all the way to the ground.
Many
visitors to Central Australia have said that being out here
was the first time they'd actually SEEN the night sky
properly. That's really not surprising, because
astronomically-speaking, "seeing conditions" are affected by
ambient light and atmospheric and meteorological conditions.
Because Central Australia is consistently excellent in these
areas, once you add to that our open 360 degree horizons, then
you're in one of the world's best locations for celestial
visibilty. Our winter night skies are the best for atmospheric
conditions

Uluru:
Uluru, also
known as Ayers Rock is one of earth's gr eat natural
wonders. Uluru is a sacred site for the Aboriginal tribes, and
has great spiritual meaning. Each feature of the rock has a
meaning in 'Tjukurpa' or Dreamtime, the traditional Anangu law
that explains how the world was created. Another mesmerizing
feature of this monolithic structure is that as each day
passes, the rock changes color depending on the light and
atmospheric conditions, and never remains the exact same
permanent shade. When it is wet, it is purple or black and on
sunny days it appears red or orange.
Uluru
can be climbed and is done so by thousands of tourists every
year. In recognition of the rock's significance to the
Aboriginal culture, the Australian government has created the
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which is visited each year by
thousands of people from all over the world. Meteor
showers and other astronomy events are also frequently held at
Uluru, where the magnificent night sky can be watched and
photographed.
Kata Tjuta:
Sprawled over 132 566 hectares of arid ecosystems and located
close to the centre of Australia in the traditional lands of
Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal people (locally
known as Anangu), the Kata Tjuta National Park is a major
crowd puller of the continent. About 32 kilometres to the west
of Uluru lie the 36 steep-sided domes of Kata Tjuta, also
known as Olgas. The domes cover an area of 3 500 hectares with
Mount Olga, the highest feature, rising to a height of 500
metres and the area is sacred under Anangu men's law.
The Kata Tjuta
National Park was declared a World Heritage Site for both its
cultural and natural values. The predominantly sand y landscape
is dominated by spinifex and low shrubs on sand dunes and sand
plains dotted with large desert oaks. Sizeable areas of mulga
woodland and other low shrubs also occur on dunes and swales.
The alluvial flow areas at the very base of the major rock
formations support large bloodwoods, acacias and native
grasses. Water holes and soaks provide restricted habitats for
a number of rare and unique plant species. Larger stands of
mulga and other acacias dominate the harder, wide, sand plain
surrounding Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
Over 150 species of birds, and many reptiles, amphibians and
invertebrates adapted to arid environments have been seen in
this Park. A number of rare mammals are also found in Kata
Tjuta, including the hairy-footed dunnart, the sandhill
dunnart and the mulgara. Reptile species are found in numbers
unparalleled anywhere else in the world and are well adapted
to the arid environment.
A
number of lizard species are found in the park, including the
rare giant desert skink and Australia's largest lizard, the
perentie, which may grow to a length of 2.5 metres. Today the
Park is jointly managed under direction of Board of management
and that includes a majority of Anangu traditional owners.
Purnululu
National Park:
Located in the East Kimberly region of Western Australia over
an area of 239,723 hectares, the Purnululu National Park is an
imposing and alluring attraction of the region. The Bungle
Bungle Range, in Purnululu National Park, is one of the most
fascinating geological landmarks and for this reason the
Purnululu National Park is also known as the Bungle Bungle
National Park. With its huge expanse of striking banded
beehive structures, sandstone cliffs and towers makes the Park
a must visit.
Now declared as a
World Heritage Site, Purnululu was nominated for its rich
Aboriginal cultural heritage spanning over some 2 0 000 years.
The general public did not know the Bungles until 1986 when a
TV crew happened to fly over and film the strange bee hive
rock formations. Since then Purnululu has been made into a
National Park. The orange and black stripes across the
beehive-like mounds, encased in a skin of silica and algae,
can be sighted from the south of this fascinating Park.
Constant erosion and river movements have formed the huge
black and orange striped domes over the last 20 million years.
T here are some fantastic gorges around the Bungle Bungle
National Park, with Echidna Chasm in the northern section of
the park, and Cathedral Gorge in the southern section of the
park. Both are about 1 hour's walk from the National Park car
park, while for the adventurous lot the long 10 hour walk of
the Piccaninny Gorge is very refreshing and thrilling. Other
gorges within the northern section of the park are
inaccessible on the ground, but offer a breath taking view
from the air.
